We use the same research process for every guide so readers can see how a recommendation was reached. Unless an article states that we tested a product ourselves, our guides are research-based and we do not claim hands-on testing.
What we look at
- Aperture and optics. Aperture, focal length, optical design and the views each combination suits.
- Mount and tracking. Alt-az, equatorial or Dobsonian mounts, stability and any computerized tracking.
- Ease of setup. Assembly, alignment, portability and how quickly a beginner can start observing.
- Accessories. Eyepieces, finders, filters and camera adapters that come with the telescope.
- Use case. Moon and planets, deep sky, kids, travel or astrophotography.
- Value. What the product offers for its price tier. We do not show prices because they change often; check Amazon for current details.
